Interesting Facts About The Niagara Falls

Experiencing Niagara Falls is an intense and memorable adventure. The expansive view, crashing waves, gentle mist, and overall ambiance galvanizes the senses. Niagara Falls is a monument to the beauty and power of nature.

On sunny days, the color of the water is like that of seawater. This is because of algae called diatoms living in the water. They grow well in this water because the water contains minerals that help their growth. Sun rays, when reflected by the prism like body of these algae, cause the water to have this color. Every minute, about 120,000 pounds of minerals, mostly limestone, brought by the flowing water, is added to the water below. These minerals too cause the water to get this color. The waterfall is visible at night from a long distance because of the illumination and fireworks.

Niagara Falls is an heirloom of the last Ice Age. Around 10,000 years ago southern Ontario was layered in ice two to three kilometers thick. This created the aquifers holding “fossil water”, a non-renewable resource constituting 99% of the Niagara River today.

The Whirlpool Rapids were created five thousand years ago. This happened through the force of water cutting through an ice-filled riverbed. This caused pressurized bubbles that eventually burst and split the nearby rock.

According to the estimation of water density and quantity, Niagara has been considering as one of the fastest moving waterfalls on earth. Especially, in peak hours, undoubtedly nearly six million cubic feet of water is roaring over the crest into the Great Gorge. It is also speedily rushing into the Whirlpool rapids and these rapids are extending for more than a mile in length. From there, actually further it rushes into Lake Ontario. The Whirlpool is almost widening for a quarter mile and it runs totally for 1,200 feet long.

At present, the waters of Niagara is needed by about one million people in not only Canada, but also the United States, where it is used as clean water for drinking, mechanical cooling effect, producing hydroelectricity and for recreation as well.

For many reasons, Niagara Falls is a choice vacation spot for families. There are many hotels for every price range in the Niagara Falls area including Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton and Best Western.
